Should You Worry If Your Kid Is Too Confident?

My daughter and I went ice skating last week.  After a few shaky times around the rink, she got into a zone and didn’t want me anywhere near her.  “I got it mommy, I got it,” she said.  I’m pretty used to that by now, so obliged and stayed a few feet behind her.  Once more around and I noticed that she seemed to hop every few feet or so.  First, I thought she was just trying not to fall because her arms were out to the side.  Then I realized what she was doing—she was trying to do a JUMP!  “Did you see me, mommy?! Did you see my jump?!”  After going ice skating a handful of times, she is confident enough to attempt a jump?!  Maybe a little too confident. Continue reading

Sometimes You Just Have To Hide

I was sitting on the edge of the bed about to take a shower when I heard, “Where’s mom, MOOOOOOM!”  I don’t know what came over me—maybe it was one too many games of Uno, Candyland or Old Maid—but I jumped up and hit underneath the bed.  When Journey got to the top of the steps, she called out mom one more time.  I heard her walking around for like 2 seconds then she went back down and told my husband that I wasn’t upstairs.  I stayed under the bed thinking surely once she realized I really wasn’t downstairs, she’d come back up to look for me. Am I Selfish To Only Have One Child?

As I play my 10th game of Toy Story Uno, my mind is racing.  In addition to being my daughter’s playmate, I’ve got a million other things to get done before the end of the day.  But how do I explain this to my only lonely little girl? Continue reading

Challenging Unrealistic Images of Beauty

journey 2012

My daughter has the most gorgeous dark, curly hair.  It’s one of the first things that people notice about her.  It’s also the thing that she likes the least about herself.  Since she turned 4, she has a fit every time I want her to wear it out.  “It’s too puffy, it looks crazy, I hate it,” she says.  I don’t know what surprised me more—the fact that she didn’t like her beautiful hair, or that I was dealing with self-image issues at such an early age.  At six, I thought the biggest dilemma she would have is worrying about how much cash the tooth fairy would leave her (she insists that each tooth is worth $20!).  Certainly not concern that her vest makes her look too puffy.  Where is this coming from? 9 Secrets Your Man Is Keeping From You

After last week’s post about the secrets a woman should keep from her man, I started to get really curious about what secrets my husband might be keeping from me.  So I asked him.  Before prefacing almost every secret with “Well I don’t do this, but…,” and asking a few other men, here’s what I was able to find out:

1. I still keep in touch with my ex.
Don’t worry, it’s just so that I can rub how happy we are in her face.

2. You’re right, I wasn’t listening.
I figured if I looked you in the eye while you were talking, you might think that I was.

3. When I break stuff, I let the kid take the blame.
Maybe if you smiled and gave me a big hug after I apologize like you do with the kid, I would be willing to fess up:)

4. I actually do want you to be a porn star in bed.
Then again, I probably couldn’t handle it.

5. You snore.
That time you asked me and I said you sounded like a small animal, I wasn’t kidding.

6. I bought a new…okay a few new TV’s.
Since you never agree to get the size that I want, every couple of years I buy the same brand of TV a few inches bigger and replace the smaller one.  Pretty genius, huh?

7. Yes, that dress does makes your butt look big.
And I like it.

8. Yes, I think your girlfriend is hot.
Admit it, you think she’s hot too.

9. My mom is coming for a visit.
Hey, better to ask for forgiveness rather than ask for permission.
